For new players we do not suggest buying the most expensive, or "latest" equipment. Locally, Dicks and Sports Authority are the only vendors that offer equipment immediately. Under the Links page there are several lacrosse specific websites listed. If you go to those sites look at what is on clearance, or in their "outlet." Right now you can pick up great deals on last year's equipment. During the summer and fall they offer even deeper discounts - just in time for the holidays.
Both Dick's and Sports Authority have clearance or inexpensive equipment and on their websites they offer what is known as "Starter Packages." You can also purchase these in the store. Equipment includes shoulder pads, arm (elbow) pads, gloves, and a stick. Some packages also include a helmet. This also includes girls - a stick, eye protection.
HELMETS: Boys are required to wear a helmet and it must be a lacrosse specified helmet. Hockey helmets are not permitted. If you are going to purchase a helmet get a black helmet. Cascade is the prominent helmet manufacturer. See: http://www.cascadelacrosse.com/
For young boys (grades 3/4), the Cascade CS is the recommended helmet. This helmet cannot be customized.
Also, there are several lacrosse websites that offer starter sets:
